In hindsight, I can say that this project was almost entirely inspired by the process of landscape painting. The initial Photoshop illustration (below in red) began as the silhouette of a hilly horizon which i filled with hints of architectural details and sailing extremities. As I considered the geometry of the top deck, I remembered the enjoyment i have experienced while hiking the lulling hills of Pennsylvania with my grandfather. Gentle inclines and slate being prominent of that environment, I was sure to include long, lazy stairs and a long, cantilevered deck. Final imagery owes much of its character to the realistic water which I produced by manipulating a few digital tools in Keyshot (not dissimilar from the way an oil painter utilizes a palette knife). Lively details such as crew members, dingy, and water turbulence were painted last for a touch of realism and scale.
